A captain’s straight advice on picking the right trip, the right boat and the right questions to ask before you book
Google lists well over a hundred fishing charters around Tampa Bay, and from the outside they look alike. They are not. This guide covers what separates a good day from a wasted one, whether you book with Aquatic Escapes or with someone else.
Captain Jarrod has been a licensed captain for 8 years and on the water for more than 30. These are the questions he would ask.
The type of trip matters more than the boat.
Not sure? Tell the captain who is coming and what they enjoy. A good captain steers you to the right trip, not the most expensive one.

A private charter means the boat, the captain and the day belong to your group. The captain fishes where your group wants to fish and teaches whoever needs it.
A party boat sells single seats. It costs less per person, but you share the rail with a crowd, and the boat goes where it goes.
For two to six people the gap is smaller than most expect. Split between four anglers, a private half day comes to about $163 each. See what a Tampa fishing charter costs.
You are trusting this person with your family on the water. A few minutes of checking is worth it.

A fair charter price includes rods, reels, tackle, bait, ice, fuel, fishing licenses and fish cleaning. Before you pay a deposit, ask about anything added on top: fuel surcharges, bait fees, cleaning fees and card fees. Get the total in writing.
At Aquatic Escapes everything on that list is included. Zelle and Venmo carry no fee, and credit cards and PayPal add 3%. Food and drinks are yours to bring, and the tip is up to you. The numbers are on the Rates page and explained in What a Tampa Fishing Charter Costs.
Weather cancels trips in Florida. Know what happens to your deposit when it does. A good policy is written down, clear about weather and clear about the deadline.
Ours: a $150 deposit holds your day. Cancel 7 or more days ahead and the full deposit comes back, no questions asked. A trip called for weather does not cost you your deposit. The details are on the FAQ page.
Tampa Bay is big. A boat ramp that is convenient from a downtown Tampa hotel can be an hour’s drive from Clearwater Beach. Ask where you board before you book, and whether the captain can pick you up closer to where you are staying.
Aquatic Escapes picks up at ramps all around the bay, from Tampa and St. Pete to Ruskin, Clearwater and Palmetto. See the pickup locations.
Most charter boats on Tampa Bay carry up to six guests. If your group is bigger, you need more boats, and the real question is whether the captain can put the whole party on the water together.
We can. Aquatic Escapes runs as many boats as your group needs, with captains Captain Jarrod has fished alongside for years. Everyone leaves the dock at the same time and fishes the same water. Group trips and special events.
Bringing kids? Our minimum age is 6, and the three hour Kids Trip is built for them.
Star ratings all look the same. The words underneath do not.
Tip: search the captain’s name as well as the business name. Good captains get mentioned by name.

February through April and summer weekends fill first, often weeks ahead. Weekdays are easier, and so is the fall. Tarpon season, May through July, books early because it is short.
If your dates are fixed, book as soon as you know them. With a full refund 7 or more days out, there is little risk in holding a day. Check availability.

An inshore half day. The water inside Tampa Bay is calm, the tackle is light, and there are usually plenty of bites from snook, redfish, trout and snapper. Four hours is long enough to learn and short enough that nobody gets worn out.
